The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday fixed Thursday for holding the next hearing on Jamaat-e-Islami leader ATM Azharul’s appeal against his death sentence and conviction in a war crimes lawsuit.
Almost 90% of the hearing process was completed on Tuesday, following which the Appellate Division fixed Thursday as the next date, claimed Azharul’s lawyer Advocate Shishir Monir.
The seven-member bench, led by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, fixed the next date for hearing.
In December 2014, the International Crimes Tribunal sentenced Azharul to death for committing war crimes, including rape, abduction, torture and massacre during the Liberation War of 1971.
He appealed against the decision with the Supreme Court, but the plea was rejected. Later, he filed a petition to review the Appellate Division order.
On 26 February this year, the division, led by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, accepted the review petition, allowing a rehearing on the appeal plea against death sentence.
